He is often called the greatest poet and playwright of ancient India. His stories and poems usually come from Hindu philosophy and the Puranas, which are sacred texts. Most people believe he lived during the Gupta era, around the 4th or 5th century CE. He wrote three plays, two epic poems, and two shorter poems. These works are celebrated for their beauty and deep feelings. Many people see his writing as a perfect example of Sanskrit literature.

Kalidasa used many different styles to tell his stories. He wrote epic poems called mahakavyas, such as Raghuvaṃśam, which tells the story of a royal family.

He also wrote shorter poems called khanda-kavyas. One famous example is Meghadūtam, or "The Cloud Messenger." In this poem, a person asks a cloud to carry a message to a loved one. He used a special rhythmic style called the mandākrāntā metre to make the words sound sweet. This helped his poems feel very musical and smooth to the reader.

There are many theories about where Kalidasa was born and lived.

Some scholars think he lived near the Himalayas because of his detailed descriptions of mountains. Others believe he lived in Ujjain or Kalinga. One scholar, Lakshmi Dhar Kalla, argued that Kalidasa was born in Kashmir. He pointed to descriptions of saffron plants and deodar trees found in the poems. In the Mithila region, a place called Kalidas Dih is considered a possible birthplace. A monument was even built there by the Uttarakhand government in a place called Kaviltha.

His plays are some of his most important works.

His masterpiece is Abhijñānaśākuntalam, which tells the story of King Duṣyanta and a woman named Śakuntalā. In the story, a curse causes the king to forget Śakuntalā until he finds a lost ring. He also wrote Mālavikāgnimitram, about a king who falls in love with a girl named Mālavikā. Another play, Vikramōrvaśīyam, tells of the love between King Pururavas and a celestial nymph named Ūrvaśī. These stories have been translated into many languages, including English and German.

Later poets called him a "kavikulaguru," which means the lord of poets. His romantic style can even be seen in the poems of Rabindranath Tagore. Some historians wonder if "Kalidasa" was actually the name of several different writers. They think different poets might have used the name to show respect. Even so, his influence on Indian literature remains very strong today. His writing continues to show the richness of the human heart.
