While he wrote much more in Persian, his Urdu poetry made him most famous. Ghalib was also a master of writing letters. Most writers back then used very fancy and stiff language. Ghalib changed this by making his letters sound like a real conversation.

Even though life was often difficult, he kept writing. He lived most of his life in poverty. He relied on the kindness of friends and money from the royal court to survive.

Despite his struggles, Ghalib held important roles in the royal court. In 1850, the Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar gave him special titles. These titles helped him become part of the nobility in Delhi.

He once hoped to become a high-ranking teacher called an Ustaad. This job would have paid him 400 rupees every month.

One big trip changed how Ghalib saw the world. He traveled to the city of Calcutta to ask for his pension.
