He was a pioneer who helped shape the Urdu language. He used a style that was both simple and elegant. His work blended local words with beautiful Persian phrases. This helped create a new, elite way of speaking called Rekhta. People love his work because it feels very natural. He is often remembered as one of the best poets in the language. His words helped guide many poets who came after him.

Mir wrote many different kinds of poems. One famous form is the ghazal, which is a short poem. He also wrote the masnavi, or long narrative poems. One of his most famous long poems is called Mu'amlat-e-Ishq. This poem is about the stages of love. He also wrote satires and qasidas. His complete works are found in his Kulliyat. This collection has six volumes called diwans. Altogether, these books contain 13,585 couplets of poetry.

Mir was born in Agra in either February or August of 1723.

At that time, the Mughal Empire ruled the land. His father, Mir Abdullah, was a religious man. His father taught him about the value of love and compassion. These lessons stayed with Mir his whole life. After his father died, Mir moved to Delhi to study. He also looked for patrons to help him financially. A man named Khan-i Dauran gave him a daily allowance.

Much of Mir's life was filled with sadness. He lived in Old Delhi at a place called Kuchha Chelan. However, his city was hurt by Ahmad Shah Abdali starting in 1748. This caused Mir great distress and grief. Because of this, he moved to Lucknow in 1782. He lived in the court of the ruler Asaf-ud-Daulah. In Lucknow, some people thought his style was old-fashioned. Mir also lost his wife, his son, and his daughter. He died in Lucknow on September 21, 1810.

Even though his life was hard, his talent was huge.

Other famous poets respected him very much. A great poet named Mirza Ghalib even called him a genius. People still debate who was better, Mir or Ghalib. You can find Mir's story in modern books and films. A Pakistani film called Mah e Mir was made about him in 2016. His life shows how poetry can turn deep sorrow into beautiful art.
