arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Gitanjali is a famous collection of poems.

It was written by the poet Rabindranath Tagore. The poems are about devotion. Devotion is a deep love or respect. Many poems focus on the theme of love. One motto from the book is "I am here to sing thee songs."

Tagore wrote the poems in the Bengali language. He later translated them into English himself. He called the English version "Song Offerings." This version uses prose. Prose is writing that looks like normal sentences.

This book has a very long history. Tagore published the original Bengali book on August 4, 1910. It contains 157 poems. Many of these became songs called Rabindra Sangeet.

The English book came out in November 1912. It was published by the India Society of London. This book has 103 prose poems. It includes 53 poems from the original Gitanjali. It also includes 50 poems from his other works. These works include Achalayatan, Gitimalya, Naibedya, and Kheya.

Tagore's work changed how the world saw literature. In 1913, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. He was the first Asian to win this prize. He was also the first non-European to win it. He is still the only Indian to receive this honor. His work is now part of the UNESCO Collection of Representative Works.
