The writing started with very old songs. The earliest known work is called the Charyapada. These are 47 mystic songs written by Buddhist monks. They were written in Old Bengali. A man named Haraprasad Shastri found these on palm leaves in 1907. He found them in the Nepal Royal Court Library. Because the language was hard to read, he called it Shôndha Bhasha. This means "dusk language."
