Bengali literature

arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Bengali literature encompasses the entire body of written works in the Bengali language. This vast collection spans roughly 1,400 to 1,600 years of history. It tracks the evolution of language through three distinct eras: Old, Middle, and Modern Bengali. These changes often followed shifts in dynastic power or changes in social patronage.

The earliest stage is the ancient period, lasting from 650 to 1200 C.E. The most significant discovery from this era is the Charyapada. This is a collection of 47 mystic hymns composed by various Buddhist monks. Famous names associated with these songs include Luipada and Kanhapada. In 1907, the linguist Haraprasad Shastri discovered these manuscripts on palm leaves. He found them in the Nepal Royal Court Library. Because the language was only partially understood, Shastri called it Shôndha Bhasha, or "dusk language."

The medieval period lasted from 1200 to 1800 and featured many different genres. An early phase, from 1200 to 1350, saw the emergence of common proverbs and rhymes. During this time, the Bengali alphabet began to resemble its current form. Another important branch is Nath Literature, which grew from the 10th century. This tradition focuses on the teachings of Nath yogis, including themes of yoga and mystical discipline. Notable works like "Goraksha Bijoy" blend supernatural stories with spiritual lessons.

Between 1350 and 1500, Muslim writers explored themes like cosmology, love, and history. They often translated or drew inspiration from Arabic and Persian works, such as the "Thousand and One Nights." This period included the romantic poems of Shah Muhammad Sagir. It also featured the Hindu lyrical poet Chandidas, who wrote about the love between Radha and Krishna. Maladhar Basu wrote the "Sri Krishna Vijaya" between 1473 and 1480. This is the oldest Bengali narrative poem with a definite date.

The late medieval era, from 1500 to 1800, saw literature flourish in the Arakan royal court. Writers like Alaol and Daulat Qazi received patronage there. Alaol is well known for his work "Padmavati." Interestingly, Alaol actually completed a romance that the poet Qazi had started but could not finish before his death. This era also featured the influence of Lalon, a figure who inspired many later social and religious thinkers.

The modern period began after 1800 and is divided into six specific phases. The first phase (1800–1850) focused on prose, driven by Christian missionaries and scholars. The second phase (1850–1900) saw the rise of the novel and Western influence. Pioneers like Bankim Chandra Chatterjee became leading novelists. He wrote "Vande Mataram," which became the national song of India. This era also saw the first full-fledged autobiography in modern Bengali, written by Rassundari Devi in 1876.

The third phase (1890–1930) was dominated by Rabindranath Tagore. He was the first person from Asia to win a Nobel Prize. Tagore's influence was so great that much of the poetry from this time was subsumed by his style. He wrote the national anthems for both India and Bangladesh. The fourth phase (1930–1947) involved writers consciously moving away from the "Tagore style." The fifth phase (1947–1971) followed the partition of India. During this time, literature in West Bengal and Bangladesh developed along different political and religious identities.

The final phase (1971–present) began after the creation of Bangladesh. Writers like Humayun Ahmed used simple language to appeal to many people. In West Bengal, writers like Sunil Gangopadhyay used a fresh view during the era of globalization. Today, the literature created by the millennial era is still being characterized. Bengali literature remains a vital connection to the history and identity of the people.
