Sikhs believe in one God, often called Waheguru.

In the past, Sikhs faced many hard times. Some rulers treated them poorly because of their beliefs. Two gurus, Guru Arjan and Guru Tegh Bahadur, were even executed. To protect their right to practice their faith, a group called the Khalsa was formed in 1699. Members of the Khalsa aim to be "saint-soldiers." This means they try to be both spiritual and brave. They want to protect freedom and do what is right.
Sikhism, also known as Sikhi, is a major Indian religion and philosophy.

The faith developed through the teachings of ten human gurus. Guru Nanak, who lived from 1469 to 1539, was the first guru and founder. Nine subsequent gurus continued this lineage of spiritual leadership. The tenth guru was Guru Gobind Singh, who lived from 1666 to 1708. He made a historic decision to end the line of human gurus. He named the Guru Granth Sahib, the central religious scripture, as the successor.

Sikh philosophy is monotheistic and panentheistic. This means Sikhs believe in one God who is also present within everything. The concept of "Ik Onkar" represents this one creator and divine unity.
To live a righteous life, Sikhs focus on spiritual development and moral conduct. Guru Nanak taught that truthful living is even higher than truth itself. One core goal is to overcome "māyā," or worldly illusion. Māyā refers to temporary attractions that distract from devotion to God. Sikhs also work to avoid the "pānj chor," or Five Thieves. These are ego, anger, greed, attachment, and lust.
Sikhism also emphasizes social responsibility through specific practices. One vital practice is sevā, which is selfless service to others. Followers also strive for "sarbat da bhala," meaning the prosperity and justice of all humankind. Many baptized Sikhs wear the five Ks, which are sacred articles of faith. These items, such as kesh (uncut hair), help distinguish Sikhs physically. Because of kesh, many Sikh men wear a turban.
The history of the faith includes periods of intense religious persecution. During the Mughal Empire, two gurus faced execution for refusing to convert to Islam. These were Guru Arjan and Guru Tegh Bahadur. In response to this pressure, Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa in 1699. The Khalsa was an order created to protect freedom of conscience and religion. Members aim to embody the qualities of a "sant-sipāhī," or saint-soldier.
Sikhs believe in the concepts of karma and reincarnation. They believe human birth is a great fortune that should be used well. While they accept the cycle of rebirth, they believe salvation is modified by God's grace. This state of liberation is called jivanmukti, or enlightenment within one's lifetime. Achieving this requires avoiding the evils of māyā and staying in the company of the "satsang," or true people.
