Nanded is a large and busy city in India. It sits in the state of Maharashtra in west-central India. The city is built on the banks of the Godavari River. This river flows right through the middle of the urban area. Nanded is divided into two main parts by the water. Old Nanded sits on the north bank of the river. New Nanded is located to the south and includes areas like Waghala. It is the tenth largest city in its state. It is also the second largest city in the Marathwada region.

The ground beneath the city has a special history. Nanded was built on ancient lava flows from the Deccan Traps. These flows happened a very long time ago. Today, the soil is mostly black and comes from these old rocks. This type of soil is good for farming. Farmers in the area grow many different things. They grow cotton, bananas, sugarcane, and mangoes. They also grow grapes, papaya, and sweet limes. A special research center helps people grow cotton successfully.

Nanded has been home to many different groups of people. Long ago, the Nanda dynasty and the Maurya Empire ruled the area. In the 10th century, a king named Krishna III is linked to the Kandhar Fort. The city became a center for the Nizam State in 1636. It was also part of the Mughal Empire under Shah Jahan. Later, Nanded became part of Hyderabad State. In 1960, it became part of the state of Maharashtra. Many different languages are spoken here, like Marathi, Urdu, and Hindi.

The city is a very holy place for many people. About 10 million visitors come to Nanded every year. Many of these people are religious pilgrims. One of the most important sites is Hazur Sahib. This is one of the five seats of authority for Sikhs. Guru Gobind Singh stayed in Nanded in 1707. He named the Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal leader. Many other beautiful temples and gurdwaras are located throughout the city. You can also visit the Nanded Fort, which is now a garden.

Traveling to and around Nanded is quite easy. The city has its own airport called Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Airport. Many flights go to cities like Delhi, Bangalore, and Pune. There are also many ways to travel by road. Several big highways pass through the city to connect it to other places. Trains are another important way to move around.
