geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Amravati is a large and busy city in India. It sits in the state of Maharashtra within the Vidarbha region. It is the ninth largest city in Maharashtra and the second largest in Vidarbha. The city serves as a main center for its district and division. This division includes other areas like Akola, Buldhana, Washim, and Yavatmal. Amravati is also part of a special project called the Smart Cities Mission. It is located about 663 kilometers east of Mumbai and 152 kilometers west of Nagpur.

The land around the city has a very interesting shape. Amravati sits near hills that act like a divide. These hills separate two different areas used for growing cotton. One area is the Purna basin to the west. The other area is the Wardha basin to the east. A famous hill station called Chikhaldara is about 80 km away. The city sits at an average height of 343 meters above sea level. The weather here is tropical with hot, dry summers from March to June. The monsoon rains arrive from July to October, followed by cool winters.

History shows that people have lived here for a very long time. A marble statue of a Jain figure was placed here in 1097. This shows humans settled in the area during the 11th century. In the 13th century, the region was ruled by the Hindu King of Devagiree. Later, a bad drought in the 14th century forced many people to leave. They moved to places like Gujarat and Malwa for a while. In the 16th century, the leader Aurangzeb gave land to a mosque. This shows how Hindus and Muslims have lived together here for centuries.

Many different people call Amravati home today. In 2011, the city had a population of 646,801 people. Most people there speak Marathi. Other common languages include Urdu, Hindi, Marwari, and Sindhi. Hinduism is the main religion, followed by Islam and Buddhism. The city is also known for having very clean air. In 2024, it was ranked as the second best National Clean Air City in India. Most people in the city can read and write well.

Traveling around Amravati is quite easy for visitors. You can use star city buses or small auto rickshaws. The city even has a special bus just for women. There are also three different railway stations in the area.
