It is often called Hubli. The city is part of a twin city pair with Dharwad. These two cities sit only 20 kilometres apart. Together, they form a huge urban area in North Karnataka. The name Hubballi comes from the Kannada words "Hoovina Balli." This means "Flowering creeper." This name helps us picture a place full of life.

The city sits in a special spot on the Earth. It is on the line between the Malnad forests and the Deccan plateau. This means the area has both green forests and flat farmland. The land is good for growing cotton, groundnuts, and oilseeds. People also find manganese ore and granite here. The weather changes with the seasons. Summers are hot and dry from February to June. Then, the monsoon season brings much rain to the area.

Hubballi has a very long history. Some parts of the city are very old. The Bhavani Shankar Temple was founded in the 11th Century. The Chandramauleshwara Temple was also built around that same time. Many different groups have ruled this land over the years. This includes the Vijayanagara Rayas and the Adilshahis. Later, the Marathas and the British also had control. In 1880, the British started a railway workshop here. This helped Hubli become a major industrial centre.

Today, Hubballi is a busy hub for business and travel.
