Today, it is one of the top ten most populated cities in Karnataka. In 2011, the urban population was about 326,000 people. Most people there speak Kannada as their first language.

The history of this place goes back a very long time. Evidence shows people lived here since the Stone Age. The city was established between the 10th and 11th centuries. At that time, the Kalyani Chalukyas ruled the area. Later, the Yadavas took control of the land. In 1347, the Bahmani Sultanate conquered the region. After that, the Bijapur Sultanate ruled from the city. The Adil Shahi dynasty also built many famous monuments. The city reached a huge size in the early 17th century. Some people think up to one million people lived there then.

Visitors can see many amazing old buildings in the city. The city has three main parts: the citadel, the fort, and the ruins. The citadel was built by the Adil Shahi Sultans. It is a very strong place made of massive materials. The fort was completed in 1566. It has a wall that is 30 feet high. This wall has ninety-six large bastions to make it strong.

The land around Bijapur is very special for farming. The district has two different types of soil. Most of the area has deep black soil. This soil is great because it holds moisture very well. It helps crops like wheat, sunflower, and pulses grow. There is also some red soil in the district. The Krishna river is the most important river here. It flows for about 125 miles through the district.

The weather in Bijapur is usually quite dry. In the summer, especially in April and May, it gets very hot. Temperatures can reach between 40 and 42 degrees Celsius. In the winter, from November to January, it feels much cooler. The temperature stays between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. The monsoon rains usually arrive in June and last until October. Even though the total rainfall is not very high, the city gets rain from two different monsoons. This helps the land stay healthy for the people living there.
