Tumakuru is a busy city in the southern state of Karnataka, India. It sits about 70 kilometers northwest of Bengaluru, which is the state capital. The land around the city is quite high up. It sits at an altitude of around 800 meters above sea level. You can find many hills and forested areas in the region. One very scenic place to see is the Devarayanadurga hill range. The terrain also has many river valleys running through it.

Many different things might have given the city its name. Some people believe it comes from "Tumbe ooru" because of a flower called thumbe hoovu. Others think it comes from a musical drum called a thamate. Another story says guards on high hills used a drum called a tumaki to send alerts. The city is also called Kalpatharu Nadu, which means land of coconut trees. This is because there are so many coconut trees in the area. The name was officially changed to Tumakuru on 1 November 2014.

Agriculture is a very important part of life in this district. Farmers rely on monsoon rainfall to help their crops grow. They grow many things like coconut and areca nut. They also grow rice, ragi, groundnut, and several types of oilseeds. The city is also becoming a big place for industry. It has a large upcoming industrial corridor and a Japanese township. It is even part of the Smart Cities Mission to help it grow.

Many people live and work in Tumakuru. According to the 2011 census, about 542,000 people lived there. Most people in the city follow the Hindu religion. Many people speak Kannada, which is the official language of the state. You can also hear people speaking Urdu, Telugu, Tamil, or Hindi. The city is home to the Siddaganga Matha Lingayat monastery. This place provides free education and housing for more than 9,000 children.

Traveling around the city is quite easy for residents. The railway station is right in the center of town. It sits on the Bangalore-Hubli main line near the bus stand. You can also ride municipal buses run by the KSRTC. Looking ahead, a new international stadium should be finished by 2028. This stadium could host big international cricket tournaments. There are also plans to connect the Bengaluru Namma Metro to the city after 2030.
