Tumakuru is a significant city located in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. It serves as the official headquarters for the Tumkur district. The city is situated at an altitude of approximately 800 meters above sea level. It sits about 70 kilometers northwest of Bengaluru, which is the capital of Karnataka. The local geography is characterized by elevated terrain and various river valleys. You can also find hilly and forested regions nearby, such as the Devarayanadurga hill range. This unique landscape provides a diverse environment for both nature and human activity.

The origins of the city's name involve several interesting theories. One possibility is that the name comes from "Tumbe ooru," referring to the abundance of thumbe hoovu flowers. Another theory suggests it stems from "thamate ooru," named after a folk musical percussion instrument called a thamate. A third story links the name to tumaki, a type of drum. During the rule of the Cholas, guards might have used these drums on hills to signal alerts. The city is also known as Kalpatharu Nadu, which means the land of coconut trees. This name reflects the many coconut trees found throughout the area. On 1 November 2014, the city's name was officially changed to Tumakuru.

Agriculture plays a vital role in the economy of the Tumakuru district. Farmers in this region rely heavily on monsoon rainfall to sustain their crops. The favorable terrain allows for the cultivation of many different products. Major crops include coconut, areca nut, rice, and ragi. Farmers also grow groundnut and several different types of oilseeds. This agricultural foundation supports the local population and connects the region to wider trade networks. The natural resources of the land remain central to the identity of the district.

Tumakuru is currently transforming into a major industrial and urban hub. It is part of the Smart Cities Mission, which aims to develop 100 cities across India. The city hosts India's first mega food park, a project managed by the ministry of food processing. This park was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India in September 2014. Furthermore, the area is developing a large industrial corridor and a dedicated Japanese township. These projects aim to increase industrial activity and economic growth. The city has held the status of a city corporation since 28 August 2010.

Infrastructure and transportation are expanding to meet the needs of a growing population. The city's railway station is a central point located on the Bangalore-Hubli main line. It sits near the town hall and the local bus stand. For local travel, municipal buses are operated by the KSRTC under the name Sri Siddaganga Nagara Sarige. Looking toward the future, an international stadium is expected to be completed by 2028. This venue will be capable of hosting international cricket tournaments. Additionally, the Bengaluru Namma Metro Green Line is planned to connect to Tumakuru after 2030.

Demographically, the city is a diverse and populated center. According to the 2011 India census, the population was approximately 542,000 people. This results in a population density of about 3,100 people per square kilometer. While the majority of residents are Hindu, there are also Muslim and Christian minorities. Kannada is the primary language and the official language of the state. However, you will also hear many people speaking Urdu, Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi. This mix of languages and religions creates a rich cultural environment.

Education and spiritual life are highly valued in Tumakuru. The Siddaganga Matha Lingayat monastery is a very famous landmark in the city. Under the leadership of Karnataka Rathna Shivakumara Swami, the matha provides free education and housing. It supports more than 9,000 children through these services. The city is also home to several higher learning institutions. These include the Siddaganga Institute of Technology, Sri Siddhartha Medical College, and Tumkur University. These centers of learning help drive the intellectual and professional growth of the region.
