Davanagere is a major city located in the center of Karnataka. This southern Indian state contains many diverse regions. Because of its central position, people call Davanagere the "Heart of Karnataka." It is the seventh largest city within the state. It also serves as the administrative headquarters for the Davanagere district. The city is surrounded by several other districts. These include Chitradurga, Vijayanagara, Shimoga, Chikmagalur, and Haveri.

The city's economy has shifted significantly over the years. In the past, Davanagere was a massive hub for cotton. This industry was so important that people called it the Manchester of Karnataka. Today, the commercial landscape looks very different. The city is now dominated by the education industry. It is also a center for agro-processing. Agro-processing involves the handling and preparation of products from farms. This shift shows how the city's role in the region has evolved.

Davanagere has a long history of local governance. It attained municipal status as early as 1870. Before 1951, the city's administration was managed by a group called the Nagarasabhe. On August 7, 1951, it officially became a municipality. Later, on January 6, 2007, its status was upgraded to a City Corporation. The district itself is relatively new. Davanagere became a separate district in 1997. Before this, it was part of the undivided Chitradurga district. This change was made for administrative convenience.

The city is organized into a specific political structure. It is divided into 45 individual wards. These wards are managed by council members known as corporators. These members are elected by the residents of the city. The entire City Corporation is headed by a Mayor. The Mayor is assisted by Commissioners and the elected council members. This system helps manage the needs of the growing population.

Demographic data shows that Davanagere is a large and growing place. According to the 2011 census, the population was 434,971. Recent estimates for 2025 suggest the population has grown to 633,000. Education is a strong point for the city. The average literacy rate is 84.90 per cent. This includes 329,003 literate people. Of these, 174,019 are males and 154,984 are females. The male literacy rate is 89.02 per cent. The female literacy rate is 80.71 per cent.

Social statistics also provide a look at the city's makeup. The sex ratio in Davanagere is 979 per 1000 males. The child sex ratio, which measures girls, is 954 per 1000 boys. The city is also recognized for its quality of life. In 2020, it was ranked as the 9th most livable city in India. This ranking applied to cities with populations under 10 million. Additionally, Davanagere was selected for the Smart Cities Mission. This is a central government program to develop modern urban areas. It was among the first 20 towns chosen for this mission.

Culture and environment are also key parts of the city. Because it sits at the center of Karnataka, its food is very diverse. It includes many different dishes from across the entire state. One very famous and aromatic food is called benne dose. The city also maintains a focus on environmental standards. It was ranked 25th among the National Clean Air Cities in India. This ranking is for cities in the category of 3 to 10 lakh in population. These factors make Davanagere a unique part of the Indian landscape.
