For many, it is a mantra or a special way to call upon the divine. In the Hindu religion, the written form is one of its most important symbols. Some thinkers believe it represents the essence of the supreme Absolute. It can also stand for consciousness, the cosmic world, or the soul known as Atman.

Scholars have long discussed where the sound first came from. Some suggest it comes from ancient words meaning "yes" or "it is so." One idea is that it is a way to urge or attain something. In the Aitareya Brahmana, the sound is linked to the three stages of creation. This is because the sound has three phonetic parts: a, u, and m.

Om has many different names depending on the tradition. Some call it Pranava, which means "fore-sound." Others use the name Omkara, which can mean "Om-maker." This name suggests the sound is the first source of creation. In Sikhism, the term Ek Onkar is used to mean "one Om-maker."

There are also names like Akshara, which means "imperishable" or "letter of the alphabet." These names show how many ways people think about this single sound.

You can find the symbol for Om in many different writing styles. In the Devanagari script, it is a beautiful cursive shape.

It is also written in many other scripts like Tamil, Bengali, and even Arabic script. Some people say the shape of a statue of Shiva looks like the Om symbol. This connects the idea of a dancing god to the symbol of the universe. Whether written or chanted, Om remains a central part of many spiritual lives.
