A mantra is a sacred sound or a group of words.

Many people believe these sounds have special spiritual or magical powers. Some mantras are just a single syllable or a short sound. One famous example is Om, which is called a seed syllable.

In Hinduism, Om is believed to be the very first sound. It is seen as the essence of the divine reality. Other mantras are much longer phrases made of many words. These can express a longing for peace, love, or light.

There are many different ways to use a mantra. One common practice is called japa. This is the meditative repetition of a mantra over and over.

People often use prayer beads called a mala to help them count. In some traditions, like the Indian tantric paths, mantras are very important. Some people must receive a special initiation to learn certain mantras. This process is called abhiseka. However, other mantras are open for anyone to use at any time.

History shows that mantras have been used for a very long time. The earliest mentions are found in the Vedas of ancient India. They are also found in the Avesta of ancient Iran.

Scholars believe these traditions share a common origin from around 2000 BCE. In Hinduism, mantras became a blend of art and science by 1000 BC. In China, they are known as Zhenyan, which means "true speech." This term describes a mantra that reveals the truth.

Different thinkers have different ideas about what a mantra truly is. Some scholars say mantras are mostly meaningless sounds. They believe the power comes from the music and the rhythm.

One scholar compared these sounds to bird songs. Bird songs have beautiful music but no literal words. Other scholars believe mantras are meaningful linguistic tools. They say mantras carry deep philosophical themes and moral principles. They can be used to express a person's inner intentions.

Many different religions use mantras in their traditions. These include Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, and Zoroastrianism.

In English, the word mantra has a broader meaning too. It can refer to any idea that is repeated frequently. For example, a sports team might have a mantra they say often. Whether used for prayer or for focus, mantras help people concentrate. They can create a special feeling or a sense of peace.
