The Tattvartha Sutra is a very important book in the Jain faith. It is also known as the Moksha-shastra, which means scripture describing the path to liberation. This text is special because it is accepted by both the Digambara and Śvētāmbara groups. It is one of the oldest and most authoritative books in Jainism. Some people compare its importance to the Brahma Sutras in Hinduism. The book helps people understand the nature of reality.

This book is written in a style called sutra. The word sutra means a thread or a string that holds things together. It is like a collection of short rules or directions. There are 350 sutras spread across ten different chapters. The first chapter talks about how we gain knowledge. Some knowledge comes from our senses, while other kinds come from books or seeing everything at once. The middle chapters explain the soul and the different worlds.

An important person named Acharya Umaswami wrote this text. He wrote it in the Sanskrit language. Most historians believe he wrote it between the 2nd and 5th centuries CE. The book begins with a special prayer called an invocation. In this prayer, the writer bows to the one who shows the path to liberation. He asks to understand the whole of reality. This helped set the foundation for Jain philosophy for many centuries.

The book explains how karma works in a very specific way. In this text, karma is seen as material particles. These tiny bits of matter flow into the soul and stick to it. This is called bondage. The karma can change a soul's body, shape, or status. It even decides where a soul is reborn. A soul might be reborn as a plant, an animal, a human, or a god.

To find freedom, followers use the three jewels. These are right view, right knowledge, and right conduct. People also follow five special vows to stop new karma from coming in. These vows include ahimsa, which means not using violence. They also include not stealing and not being possessive. To shed old karma, people might practice fasting or meditation. One famous motto from the text says that souls should help one another.
