Moksha is a very important idea in many Indian religions. It is found in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. The word comes from a Sanskrit root that means to free or let go.

In Jainism, the word is seen as a mix of two parts. One part means attachment and the other means its destruction. This shows that Moksha is about letting go of things that hold us back. It is a way to find true freedom and peace.

Many people believe Moksha is a way to escape a cycle. This cycle is called saṃsāra, which is the process of birth and rebirth.

Some traditions see this cycle as a path of suffering. This suffering can come from things like sickness or getting old. By reaching Moksha, a person can find release from this repeating cycle. This release is also known by other names like nirvana or mukti. Different groups have their own ways to describe this special state.

This idea has a long history in ancient writings. The earliest ideas appeared in Sanskrit verses and the Upanishads.

One famous text is the Katha Upanishad from the second half of the first millennium BCE. In this story, a boy named Nachiketa asks Yama, the lord of death, about life. He wants to know what causes the cycle of rebirth. He also asks how a person can find true liberation. These ancient questions helped shape how people think about the soul today.

In Hinduism, Moksha is one of the four main aims of life. These four goals are called the Puruṣārtha.

One goal is dharma, which means living a moral life. Another is artha, which is finding material success. The third is kama, which is finding emotional fulfillment and pleasure. Moksha is the final and highest aim for many followers. It is seen as the ultimate goal of a human life.

There are different ways to understand how Moksha works. Some thinkers say it is about knowing your true self. Others believe it comes from being very disciplined and pure.

Some people think you can reach this state while you are still alive. This is called jivanmukti, or liberation in this life. Others believe it happens after death, which is called videhamukti. Whether through meditation or good deeds, it is a journey toward perfect peace.
