A mantra is a sacred utterance believed to possess spiritual, magical, or religious powers.

These can take many forms, such as a single syllable, a word, or a group of phonemes. Most often, mantras are spoken in Indo-Iranian languages like Sanskrit or Avestan. While some mantras have a clear syntactic structure and literal meaning, others do not. Practitioners use them to connect with the divine or to achieve specific mental states. In a broader English context, the word can also describe any idea that is repeated frequently to express a strong belief.

There are several distinct types of mantras used in various traditions. One important type is the seed syllable mantra, known as a bijamantra. An example is the syllable ॐ (Aum or Om), which is vital in many Indian religions. In Hinduism, Om is considered the first sound and the sonic essence of the absolute divine reality.

Other mantras are much longer phrases consisting of several syllables and names. These longer mantras often carry spiritual interpretations, such as a longing for truth, peace, or light. Examples include the Gayatri Mantra, the Hare Krishna mantra, and the Namokar Mantra.

The practice of using mantras involves specific methods and structures. A common practice is japa, which is the meditative repetition of a mantra.

People often perform japa with the aid of a mala, which is a string of prayer beads used for counting. In Indian tantric traditions, mantras play a central role in elaborate yogic methods. These are sometimes called mantra paths, or Mantranāya. In these specific traditions, a person might require a ritual initiation called abhiseka to recite certain mantras associated with a deity. However, many other mantras remain open to everyone without such requirements.

Historical evidence shows that mantras have deep roots in ancient civilizations. The earliest mentions appear in the Vedas of ancient India and the Avesta of ancient Iran. The terms Sanskrit mantra and Avestan mąθra likely descend from a common Proto-Indo-Iranian root, *mantram. This root combines *men, meaning "to think," with the instrumental suffix *trom. Scholars date this common origin to around 2000 BCE. It is believed that the use of mantras in India began before 1000 BC. By the middle Vedic period, between 1000 BC and 500 BC, mantras in Hinduism had developed into a complex blend of art and science.

Scholars hold different views regarding the linguistic nature of mantras. One school of thought suggests that many mantras are mostly meaningless sound constructs. Scholar Frits Staal compared these non-linguistic mantras to bird songs. He noted that while bird songs have no literal words, they possess powerful communication through sound. He also observed that some Hindu mantras, like the saman chants, are metered with mathematical precision. These chants were transmitted verbally for over 1000 years without being written down.

These sounds may lack literal meaning, but they create a specific tone and ambiance during rituals.

Another perspective argues that mantras are meaningful linguistic instruments of the mind. This view holds that mantras contain philosophical themes, moral principles, and spiritual expressions. For example, a devotee might choose a mantra to express a specific intention or to call upon a spiritual entity. Some scholars, like Jan Gonda, define mantras as verses or formulas used in rituals to realize intentional thought. These mantras are often collected in methodically arranged ancient texts. They serve as a means to identify oneself with the essence of divinity or to express sakti, or power.

Mantras are utilized across a wide variety of religious systems. They are central to the traditions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, and Zoroastrianism. In China, the concept is known as Zhenyan, or "true speech," which refers to mantras that reveal the truth of the dharmas.

This term is also used for the Shingon sect. Whether viewed as mathematical sounds or meaningful prayers, mantras serve to create a private, emotive, and numinous effect in the practitioner. They remain a vital tool for concentration and spiritual connection across many cultures.
