It is a very important part of many spiritual practices today.

There is a special way that the mantra is said. It usually starts with the syllable Om. This is followed by three special sounds called Vyahrtis. These sounds represent different planes of existence. One is physical, one is mental, and one is spiritual. The main part of the mantra has a specific rhythm. It is called Gayatri Chandas.

Most versions have twenty-four syllables in three lines. Some versions actually have twenty-three syllables instead.

This mantra has a very long and interesting history. It comes from the Rig Veda, which is an ancient text. A famous sage named Vishvamitra is said to have written it. He is also known as the author of Mandala 3 in the Rig Veda. The mantra is also linked to a goddess named Gayatri.

Even the Buddha knew about this special meter. He described it as a foremost meter, much like the sun is the foremost light. This shows how old and respected the mantra has always been.

Many different books and groups mention the Gayatri Mantra. It appears in the Bhagavad Gita and the Manusmṛti. It is also used in important ceremonies for young Hindu men. This ceremony is called upanayana and marks the start of Vedic study. In the 1800s, leaders like Ram Mohan Roy studied the mantra deeply.

Later, Swami Vivekananda shared the mantra with many new people. He believed that anyone could learn it through a teacher. This helped the mantra spread to many people across the world.

Today, you can find the Gayatri Mantra in many places. In Indonesia, Balinese Hindus use it in their daily prayers. They perform the Trisandhya Puja three times every day. They say the mantra at 6 am, at noon, and at 6 pm. It is also used in modern culture on pendants and recordings.
