Baba Amte was a famous social worker in India. He was born Murlidhar Devidas Amte on December 26, 1914. He grew up in a wealthy family in Hinganghat, Maharashtra.

As a boy, he enjoyed hunting and sports. He even owned a sports car when he was young. However, he noticed that many people in India were very poor. He did not want to ignore their problems. This feeling led him to change his life path. He studied law and became a successful lawyer in Wardha.

Amte became a follower of Mahatma Gandhi. He joined the movement for Indian independence. He even worked as a lawyer for leaders in the Quit India movement.

Gandhi gave him a special name, Abhay Sadhak. This means "Fearless Seeker of Truth." Amte lived a simple life and wore khadi clothes. He used a charkha to spin yarn. He believed in helping people through non-violent ways. He wanted to help his country become free and fair.

One day, Amte met a man named Tulshiram. Tulshiram had leprosy, which is a very serious disease.

At that time, people were very afraid of leprosy. They often treated sick people very badly. This fear made Amte want to take action. He wanted to stop the "leprosy of the mind." This meant stopping the fear and the shame people felt. To prove the disease was not easily spread, he even injected himself with the bacilli. He wanted to show that people could be safe and cared for.

Amte and his wife, Sadhana, worked hard to help others. On August 15, 1949, they started a hospital in Anandwan.

They began their work under a tree. They built a place where people with leprosy could live with dignity. Patients learned how to farm and make beautiful handicrafts. Amte also founded other places like Somnath and Ashokwan. In 1973, he started the Lok Biradari Prakalp to help the Madia Gond tribal people. His work helped many people find new ways to live and work.

Amte won many important awards during his life. He received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1985. He also won the Padma Vibhushan in 1986.

He even won the Templeton Prize in 1990. His children and daughters-in-law also became doctors to help people. They continue his work in places like Hemalkasa. Amte died on February 9, 2008. He chose to be buried to help the earth. His life showed that one person can change many lives.
