Ayyankali was a very important leader in India. He lived during a time of great unfairness. He worked to help people who were treated poorly. These people belonged to the Pulayar community. They lived in a place called Travancore. This area is now part of the state of Kerala.

Ayyankali was a reformer and a lawmaker. He also helped people learn to read and write. Many people call him the King of Pulaya today. He changed how society worked for many families.

In the past, life was very hard for Pulayars. They were often forced to work for landowners. They could not own their own land. They were also not allowed to go into temples. Even using public roads was not allowed for them. Ayyankali saw this injustice and wanted to act. He joined friends to sing and dance. They used folk music to protest their situation. This helped him become a famous leader.

Ayyankali used bold ways to fight for rights. In 1893, he did something very daring. He bought a bullock cart to travel. He rode it on roads used by upper castes. This showed that everyone should have freedom of movement. He also went into the marketplace at Nedumangad. These acts helped other people feel brave too. By the year 1900, Pulayars could use most roads. This was a big change for the state.

Education was another big goal for Ayyankali. He was not able to read or write himself. Because of this, he wanted all children to learn. He founded a group called the SJPS in 1907. This group helped protect and support poor people. When a school was burned down, he led a strike. Agricultural workers stopped working in the paddy fields. They did this to demand better school access. This strike helped make things fairer for children.

His hard work led to many lasting successes. He even became a member of the Sree Moolam Popular Assembly. This was a group of leaders in Travancore. He also helped women in his community. He fought for their right to cover their upper bodies. In 2002, India put his face on a postage stamp. This shows how much people respect his memory. He is remembered as a hero of modern Kerala. His life shows how one person can change a nation.
