Marthanda Varma was a very important king in southern India. He ruled the kingdom of Travancore from 1729 until 1758. Before he became king, the land was called Venadu. At that time, the kingdom was quite small. It only stretched from Edava in the north to Aralvaimozhi in the south. Powerful local nobles often held more control than the royal family. Marthanda Varma worked hard to change this. He wanted to make the king the true leader of the land.

To gain power, the king had to face many hard jobs. He fought against local groups called the Ettuveetil Pillamar and the Yogakkar council. These groups had often worked against his family. Marthanda Varma used spies to learn their secrets. He eventually defeated these nobles and took full control. He also built a huge standing army of about 50,000 men. He used a new way of training his soldiers to make them very organized. This helped him expand his kingdom much further north.

History shows how Marthanda Varma rose to power. He was born in 1706 to Queen Karthika Thirunal Umadevi and Raghava Varma. His father died when Marthanda Varma was only one year old. When King Rama Varma died in 1729, a fight for the throne began. Two cousins named Valiya Thampi and Kunju Thampi claimed the crown. They used the help of the local nobles to fight the king. Marthanda Varma had to fight these relatives to become the ruler.

There were many important events during his long reign. In 1741, he won a major battle at Colachel. He defeated the forces of the Dutch East India Company. During this fight, he captured many Dutch prisoners. One famous prisoner was a man named Eustachius de Lannoy. The king asked him to help organize a special regiment for the army. Marthanda Varma also controlled trade in black pepper. He made sure the kingdom grew wealthy through ocean trade.

King Marthanda Varma left a big mark on his land. He built many roads and canals to help people travel. He also worked on irrigation to help with farming. In January 1750, he made a special choice for his kingdom. He decided to donate his land to the deity Padmanabha. From then on, he ruled as a helper for the god. His successor, Rama Varma, continued much of this important work.
