Dutch Ceylon was a special area on the island of Sri Lanka. It was run by the Dutch East India Company from 1640 until 1796.

During this time, the Dutch controlled the lands near the ocean. These areas are called the maritime provinces. However, they never took control of the Kingdom of Kandy. That kingdom stayed in the middle of the island. The Dutch stayed mostly on the coast to manage trade. They wanted to control valuable things like cinnamon and pepper.

To run the land, the Dutch used many different people. They controlled the Tamil provinces along the coast.

The Dutch brought workers from a place called Tanjore. These workers helped in the cinnamon gardens of the Western Province. They also worked on tobacco farms in Jaffna. The Dutch also brought manpower from Dutch India to help. This helped them grow many important plants for trade.

Before the Dutch arrived, the Portuguese ruled parts of the island. The Portuguese rule was often very hard on the local people.

The Sinhalese king of Kandy wanted the Portuguese to leave. He invited the Dutch to help him fight. In 1638, King Rajasinghe II signed a treaty with the Dutch. This treaty was meant to help them fight their common enemy. It was a big moment that changed the history of the island.

Many battles happened as the Dutch took over.

In 1638, Admiral Adam Westerwolt won a big sea battle near Goa. He then captured the fort at Batticaloa in May 1638. Later, in March 1640, Willem Jacobsz Coster captured the fort at Galle. This was a very hard job for his men. Galle became the main center for Dutch power for 18 years. These victories helped the Dutch slowly push the Portuguese away.

Things changed again because of wars far away in Europe. In 1792, the French Revolutionary Wars began.

France invaded the Dutch Republic and caused a lot of confusion. This made it hard for the Dutch to rule their lands far away. The last Dutch Governor was named Johan van Angelbeek. Soon after, the British took control of the island. The era of Dutch Ceylon finally came to an end in 1796.
