It ruled from the year 1469 until 1815. This kingdom grew as the older Kotte kingdom began to fall apart. The first monarch was likely Senasammata Vikramabahu. He set up a court at a place called Senkadagalapura. Kandy became the main successor to the older Sinhalese kingdoms. It was a very important center for political power. It was also the last independent state to face European expansion.

Religion was a huge part of how the kingdom worked. Kandy was the main protector of Buddhism in the region. The kings used their support of Buddhism to show they were rightful leaders. A very special object was kept at the Sri Dalada Maligawa temple. This was the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha. Owning this relic helped prove a king was the true sovereign.

The king held absolute power in a system called a monarchy. However, a group of powerful nobles helped him rule the land. This helped the king manage a large and difficult territory.

Life in the kingdom was mostly rural and based on farming. People grew rice and used a type of farming called chena. The king theoretically owned all the land in the kingdom. He gave land to temples, nobles, or people who provided service. In return, these people performed military or religious duties. This system connected the economy to the social ranks of the people.

Trade networks also helped the regional economy grow over time.

Kandy had to fight many wars to stay free. In the 1500s, the Portuguese Empire tried to take control of the coast. The kingdom of Sitawaka also invaded and occupied Kandy for ten years. A leader named Wimaladharmasuriya I eventually secured his power. He brought the sacred tooth relic to Kandy in 1595. Later, the Dutch East India Company arrived to help fight the Portuguese. However, the Dutch soon became rivals to the Kandyan people.

This led to wars that made Kandy a landlocked country.

Nature helped the kingdom survive for over three hundred years. The land had steep mountains and very thick forests.

Narrow mountain passes made it hard for invading armies to enter. Kandyan forces used these hills to perform hit-and-run attacks. They even moved people out of cities when enemies drew near. In 1739, the Nayak family from South India began to rule. They helped create a beautiful culture of dance and architecture. Finally, internal fights led to the British taking control in 1815.
