Kandy was a very important place for Buddhism. The kings kept a sacred tooth relic in a temple.

Owning this relic showed that a king was the rightful ruler.

Most people in Kandy were farmers. They grew rice to eat. The land was hard to reach. It had steep mountains and thick forests. This helped the people stay independent. They used the land to fight off invaders.

For many years, groups from Europe tried to take control. The Portuguese and the Dutch came to the coast. Kandy stayed free for a long time. In 1739, a new family called the Nayaks began to rule. They helped build many beautiful temples. Finally, in 1815, the kingdom fell to the British. Internal fights between the king and nobles made it weak.

Even after that, Kandy's culture lives on today.
