Pandukabhaya was a very important ruler in Sri Lanka. He was the first king of the Anuradhapura Kingdom. He ruled from 437 BC to 367 BC. Many people call him the first truly Sri Lankan king. This is because he helped different groups of people live together. He ended many old fights between different clans. He worked hard to organize the whole population.

His life was full of hard jobs from the start. He was the son of Princess Unmadachithra and Prince Dighagamini. Some people feared him because of what astrologers predicted. To keep him safe, he was raised in a village called Doramadalawa. A wise man named Pandula helped him grow up. Pandula taught him the skills needed to be a king. He even gave the prince an army at a place called Kasagala.

Pandukabhaya had to fight many battles to lead. His uncles and his mother's brothers fought against him. He fought them at places like Dhooma Rakha and Ritigala. He faced many soldiers from his uncle Girikandasiva. A woman named Chathiya helped him win these many fights. Eventually, he defeated all his enemies. This allowed him to finally take his place as a leader.

As a king, he built many useful things for his people. He arrived at a place called Anuradhagama. He turned it into the great Anuradhapura Kingdom. He built one of the oldest hospitals in the area. He also built the first reservoir called Abaya Wewa. This large water tank helped provide water for the land. He even hired workers to keep the city streets clean.

Pandukabhaya was a very organized leader. In his tenth year, he marked the lines for every village. This was the first time a king did this on the island. He had a chief advisor named Chandra. His wife was Queen Swarnapali, who was also called Pali. Legend says her name means gold because of a lotus leaf. His story is so famous that a film called Aba was made about him.
