He founded a group called the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, or the LTTE. Many people called them the Tamil Tigers. This group wanted to create an independent state for Tamil people. They called this land Tamil Eelam. They wanted this land in the north and east of the country. This goal was a reaction to how the government treated Tamil people. Prabhakaran believed the government was unfair to them.

Prabhakaran grew up in a town called Valvettithurai. This town is on the northern coast of the Jaffna peninsula.

He was born on November 26, 1954. He was the youngest of four children. His father was a District Land Officer. His family was wealthy and managed important Hindu temples. As a student, he joined groups to fight for Tamil rights. He wanted fair rules for students to enter university. In 1972, he helped start a group called the Tamil New Tigers.

The fight between the LTTE and the government lasted for over 25 years. In 1975, Prabhakaran killed the mayor of Jaffna, Alfred Duraiappah. This happened because the group blamed the mayor for the deaths of Tamils. In 1976, the group changed its name to the LTTE. A big turning point happened in July 1983. The LTTE attacked an army patrol and killed 13 soldiers. This led to a very violent time called Black July. Many Tamil civilians died and many lost their homes. This event is seen as the start of the Sri Lankan Civil War.

There were times when people tried to find peace. In 2001, the LTTE had a tactical victory in Eelam War III. This led to international talks to stop the fighting. In April 2002, Prabhakaran held a press conference in Killinochchi. He spoke to more than 200 journalists there. He said the LTTE wanted three main things. They wanted a Tamil homeland, a Tamil nationality, and the right to decide their own future. He said they were committed to the peace process. However, the peace talks eventually broke down.

The war came to an end in 2009. The Sri Lankan Army began a big campaign in 2006. In May 2009, the fighting became very intense in the north. Prabhakaran's son, Charles Anthony, died in a fight with the army. On May 18, 2009, Prabhakaran was killed during a fight. His death led to a ceasefire. Some people see him as a hero or a martyr. Other people see him as a leader of a very tough and ruthless group. His tactics influenced many other groups around the world.
