Many different people call Jaffna their home. Most of the residents are Sri Lankan Tamils. Many of these people follow the Hindu religion. You will also find Christians, Muslims, and a small number of Buddhists. Before a long civil war, the city was very large. It was the second most populous city in Sri Lanka, right after Colombo. Today, the city has many important places like schools, banks, and hotels. It is also a place where many people work in small industries.

The history of Jaffna goes back a very long time. Long ago, people lived there during the Iron Age. They left behind old pots and seals that show how they lived. In the 13th century, a powerful group called the Kingdom of Aryacakravarti began. This kingdom was a regional power in Sri Lanka. Its capital was a suburb called Nallur. This area was a center for beautiful Tamil and Sanskrit writing.

Over the years, many different rulers controlled the city. The Portuguese took control in 1619. Later, the Dutch took the city from them in 1658. The Dutch rebuilt the Jaffna Fort and helped the city grow. After the Dutch, the British took over in 1796. During the British period, the city became very wealthy. They built big roads and a railway line to connect Jaffna to other places like Colombo and Kandy.

Jaffna has faced many hard times recently. A civil war caused a lot of damage to the city. Many people had to leave their homes to stay safe. During the fighting, famous places like the Jaffna library were even burnt down. However, the war ended in 2009. Since then, people have been moving back to their homes. Both the government and private groups are working hard to rebuild the city and its many historical sites.
