It sits south of Colombo and serves as the capital of the Southern Province. The city is part of the Galle District and is a very important place on the island. A natural harbour provides a safe spot for ships to rest. Nearby, a large hill called Rumassala forms a protective barrier for the harbour. This hill is even mentioned in the great Hindu epic called the Ramayana.

The history of Galle is filled with many different people. Long ago, it was known as Gimhathiththa. Travelers like Ibn Battuta visited the area in the 14th century. For a very long time, many groups traded at the port. These included people from Persia, Arabia, Greece, Rome, and China. In 1502, Portuguese ships arrived after being blown off course by a storm. Later, the Dutch took control in 1640. They built the famous Galle Fort starting in 1649. This fort has thick granite walls and three bastions named Sun, Moon, and Star.

Life in Galle has changed through many different eras. The city reached its highest point of development during the Dutch period in the 18th century. The British later took over the country from the Dutch in 1796. They kept the fort the same and used it as an administrative centre. In 2004, the city faced a very hard time. A massive tsunami caused by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean hit the coast. Many people were killed, and the city was devastated. However, the city worked to rebuild, including the beautiful Galle International Stadium.

Another way is to use the Southern Expressway. This is the first E Class highway in Sri Lanka. It connects Colombo to Galle in only one hour. This is much faster than the regular A2 highway, which takes three hours. The city also has many local roads and a large river called the Gin Ganga. This river flows through many villages before it finally reaches the sea at Gintota.
