It is the largest coastal city in the country. It is also the second largest city in all of Namibia. The city sits right on the edge of the ocean. It is built around a large bay that stays very calm. A sand spit called Pelican Point protects this water.

This makes it the only natural deep-water harbour along the coast. This special spot is a safe haven for many sea vessels.

The waters around the bay are full of life. There is a huge amount of plankton in the sea. This food attracts many southern right whales to the area. Fishing vessels also come here to work in these rich waters. Because of the animals and the port, many people visit the area.

The city is also a busy place for many different jobs. Many people move here to work in the fishing and port industries. Some people even work in oyster farming.

The history of this place is quite complicated. It was first discovered by the outside world in 1485. A Portuguese navigator named Diogo Cão reached nearby Cape Cross then. Later, Bartolomeu Dias anchored his ship here in 1487. He called the area "O Golfo de Santa Maria da Conceição." For a long time, the town was an exclave. This meant it was ruled separately from the rest of Namibia. It was often controlled by South Africa instead of Namibia.

Walvis Bay is one of the driest cities on Earth. It has a cold desert climate. This happens because of the Naukluft Mountains and a cold ocean current. Even though it is dry, the air feels very wet. The humidity stays above 80 percent most of the year. The warmest month is usually February. The coolest months are August and September. Interestingly, the hottest temperatures do not always happen in the summer. Sometimes, winds from the inland plateau bring heat during other seasons.

Today, the city is a very popular place for tourists. People come to see the huge sand dunes and the many birds.

Visitors can explore the salt works or visit Bird Island. There is even a museum for people to enjoy. Some people go to the beach resort called Langstrand nearby. The city is also home to the Kuisebmund Stadium. Two clubs from the Namibia Premier League play there. It is a lively and growing place for everyone.
