The city sits right on the Atlantic Coast. It is located very near the Namib Desert. This makes the area feel dry with desert plants. The weather is often cool for a desert place. A cold ocean current called the Benguela Current flows nearby. This current keeps the air from getting too hot. In July and August, temperatures can fall below 18 °C.

At first, people built a factory and a fort at Ponta Negra. Many settlers came from places like Madeira and Brazil. In the 1850s, many German colonists also moved there. The city even changed its name to Namibe for a while. This name change lasted from 1985 until 2016.

Moçâmedes grew into a very important place for fishing. By the 1960s, there were 143 fishing boats in the water. Many factories were built to process the fish caught there. The city also became a major spot for mining. Between 1966 and 1967, a large terminal was built at Saco. This terminal is 12 km north of the city. It was built to help move iron ore from a mine in Cassinga.

This train line was changed to a wider track in the 1950s. You can also reach the city by plane. The Namibe Airport is about 7 km south of the city. There is also an older airport called Yuri Gagarin nearby. It is only about 1.7 km from the center.
