Early settlement shaped the character of the growing city. A factory was established in 1840. A fort was also built at Ponta Negra that same year. Many Portuguese settlers arrived from Madeira and Brazil. In the 1850s, the government helped German colonists move there. The city was known as Namibe between 1985 and 2016. It has since returned to its name, Moçâmedes. The city grew significantly as a major fishing port. By the 1960s, it hosted 143 fishing boats and several processing factories.
Industrial development transformed the local economy in the mid-1960s. A major iron ore terminal was built at Saco. Saco is a bay located 12 km north of Moçâmedes. This terminal served the iron ore mine at Cassinga. To move the ore, a 300 km railway was commissioned. The German company Krupp worked on the mine and railway. The Portuguese company SETH built the modern harbour terminal.
Moçâmedes is a critical center for transportation in Angola. It is one of the country's three major seaports. The Moçâmedes Railway ends at the city. This railway line used a 600mm gauge originally. It was later converted to a 1067mm gauge in the 1950s. Air travel is also available through two nearby locations. The Namibe Airport is about 7 km south of the city. The old Yuri Gagarin airport is only 1.7 km from the center.
