Angola finally became an independent republic in 1975. However, independence brought a very hard time. A long civil war started that same year. Different groups fought for control of the country. Some groups were backed by the Soviet Union and Cuba. Other groups were supported by the United States and South Africa.

Angola is a large nation on the western coast of Southern Africa.
The history of the region began in the Palaeolithic Age. Originally, the land was home to nomadic Khoi and San peoples. These groups were hunter-gatherers who did not practice large-scale farming. During the first millennium BC, Bantu-speaking peoples migrated from the north. They likely came from areas in modern Nigeria and Niger. These migrants introduced new crops like bananas and taro. They also brought large herds of cattle to the highlands.
Many powerful kingdoms emerged during the pre-colonial era. The Kingdom of Kongo was one of the most significant. It was a highly centralized state ruled by a monarch. This kingdom controlled many neighboring states as vassals. It also established vast trade routes across southwestern Africa. To the south, the kingdoms of Ndongo and Matamba were prominent. Other groups included the Ovimbundu kingdoms and the Mbunda Kingdom.
Portuguese explorers arrived in the region in the late 15th century. Diogo Cão reached the area in 1484. Relations were established with the Kingdom of Kongo in 1483.
Conflict between local kingdoms and Portugal lasted for centuries. The Kingdom of Kongo fought three wars against the Portuguese. This struggle eventually led to the Portuguese conquest of Ndongo. In the 19th century, the banning of the slave trade changed the economy again. European settlers began moving into the interior of the country. The modern borders of Angola were not finalized until the early 20th century. Native groups like the Cuamato and Kwanyama resisted colonial rule. Finally, a long anti-colonial struggle took place between 1961 and 1974.
Angola achieved independence in 1975 as a one-party republic. This independence was immediately followed by a devastating civil war. The war lasted from 1975 until 2002. Several groups fought for control of the nation. The MPLA was supported by the Soviet Union and Cuba.
Since the civil war ended, Angola has seen rapid economic growth. It is now a stable constitutional republic. The economy is among the fastest-growing in the world.
Angola is an active member of many international organizations. It belongs to the United Nations and the African Union. It is also part of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries. The country is a key part of the Southern African Development Community. Its geography and history continue to influence its role in Africa. From its coastal ports to its central highlands, Angola remains a complex and changing nation.
