Long ago, the lagoon provided safe shelter for ships. This made Negombo an important port for trading. The area was once ruled by the Sinhala monarchy. In the early 1500s, the Portuguese arrived and built a fort. They took control of the cinnamon trade for over a hundred years. Later, the Dutch captured the city from the Portuguese in 1646. The British took over the cinnamon trade in 1796. By 1907, a large railway project connected Negombo to the rest of the island.

Today, the city is famous for its fishing and its many religions.

Many people live in villages along the water's edge. They use traditional boats like oruvas and paruvas to catch fish. Negombo is often called "Little Rome."
