Kollam has a very long and interesting history. It is one of the oldest cities in India where people have lived continuously. Evidence shows people lived there during the megalithic age. For thousands of years, it has been a famous maritime entrepôt. An entrepôt is a port where goods are traded and moved. Many different groups have visited the port over time. These include the Romans, the Chinese, the Arabs, and the Ethiopians.

A Persian merchant named Sulaiman al-Tajir visited in the ninth century. He saw huge Chinese ships using the port as a hub. Even older maps show the city.
