It sits along the Malabar Coast in the state of Kerala. Many people call it the City of Spices. This name comes from its famous port. The port was a gateway for many different people. Traders from China, Persia, and Arabia all came here. They wanted to trade goods like pepper, ginger, and cinnamon.

This made the city a very important place for business.

The city has a long and interesting history. In the Middle Ages, it was a powerful kingdom. It was ruled by leaders called the Samoothiris. Many people call these rulers the Zamorins. The city grew around a palace and a temple. Some say the name Kozhikode comes from words meaning a fortified palace.

In the 14th century, the city grew even stronger. It took control of large parts of central Kerala. This helped the Zamorins become the most powerful rulers in the region.

Famous explorers changed the way the world saw Kozhikode. In 1498, a Portuguese explorer named Vasco da Gama arrived.

He found a new sea route from Europe to India. This arrival changed trade forever. Later, many other groups arrived to trade as well. The English arrived in 1615. The French came in 1698, and the Dutch arrived in 1752. These different groups all wanted to be part of the spice trade.

Many travelers wrote about the city in the past. An explorer named Ibn Battuta visited six times. He saw merchants from all over the world. He even noted how wealthy some merchants were. Another traveler, Ma Huan, saw many mosques in the city. He also noticed how merchants used their fingers and toes to count.

Other writers described the big bazaars and the many spices available. These stories show how much the world cared about this port.

Today, Kozhikode is still a very important place. It is the largest city on the Malabar Coast. About 609,224 people live within the city boundaries. In 2023, UNESCO gave it a special title. They named it India's first City of Literature.
