She served as the fifth president of her country. She held this role from November 1994 until November 2005. This makes her the longest-serving president in Sri Lankan history. She also led a large political group called the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. Her life has been full of big changes for her nation. She worked hard to help her country find stability.

Her work focused on making the economy and society better. She used a plan called "capitalism with a human face." This meant she wanted a market economy that still helped people. She focused on fairness and social protection for everyone. Her ideas helped the economy perform better than before. She also wanted to bring peace back to public life. This was important after a time of great unrest and violence.

Chandrika grew up seeing how leaders make big decisions. This early life helped prepare her for her own future.

She studied very hard to learn about the world. She went to school in Colombo and then moved to France. She studied political science and economics in cities like Paris and Aix-en-Provence. She could speak three languages: Sinhala, English, and French. In 1993, she became the Chief Minister of the Western Province. Later, in 1994, she won a huge election. She got almost 62% of the votes to become president.

This was a very large victory.

During her time as president, she faced many hard jobs. She tried to have peace talks with a group called the LTTE. When those talks failed, she started a military campaign called the "War for Peace." She also tried to change the rules of the government. She wanted to give more power to the Tamil people through new laws. Even though she faced many challenges, she remained a major figure. Her story shows how one person can lead a whole nation through change.
