He was born on February 23, 1954, in a place called Khoruzhivka. His parents were both teachers who worked at a local school. His father, Andriy, had been a prisoner in several camps during the Second World War. Viktor grew up in a region where most people spoke Ukrainian. This became important later in his life. He studied economics and worked as an accountant before entering the world of finance.

Before he led the country, Yushchenko worked in banking. In 1993, he became the Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine. This was a very big and difficult job. He helped create a new national currency called the hryvnia. He also worked to stop hyperinflation, which is when prices rise very quickly. He brought inflation down from over 10,000 percent to less than 10 percent. This helped make the country's money more stable.

His political career moved from banking to leading the government. He served as the prime minister from 1999 to 2001. After he left that role, he started a political group called Our Ukraine. This group became the most popular force in the country by 2002. In 2004, Yushchenko ran for president against Viktor Yanukovych. During the campaign, Yushchenko was poisoned with a chemical called dioxin. The poison was very strong and changed how his face looked. He survived the attempt, but it was a very serious event.

The 2004 election led to a major event called the Orange Revolution. Many people believed the first election results were unfair. Because of these protests, the Supreme Court ordered a new vote. Yushchenko won this second vote with 52 percent of the support. He became the third president of Ukraine in early 2005.

His main goal was to bring Ukraine closer to Europe and NATO. He wanted his country to work with the European Union and other strong nations.

Being president was not always easy for Yushchenko. He had many disagreements with other leaders, including Yulia Tymoshenko. These arguments caused many problems in the government. His popularity also began to drop over time. In the 2010 election, he finished in fifth place. He did not win a second term in office.
