During his first term, Kuchma focused on fixing the economy. He wanted to move Ukraine toward a market economy. This means businesses could own things instead of the government. He worked with groups like the International Monetary Fund to help. One big step was starting a new national currency. In September 1996, the country launched the hryvnia. This new money helped make the economy more stable. He also helped move many industries from state control to private control.

Kuchma did not start his life in politics. He was born in 1938 in a small village called Chaikyne. His father died during World War II when Leonid was only four. Leonid studied to be a mechanical engineer at a university. He graduated in 1960 and worked with aerospace engineering. He even worked at the Baikonur cosmodrome. Later, he moved into politics and became the Prime Minister in 1992. He won the presidency in 1994 against Leonid Kravchuk.

His second term began after he won re-election in 1999. This time, he won against Petro Symonenko. While the economy grew for some people, other problems grew too. Corruption became a big issue during these years. This is when people in power use things for themselves. There were also scandals involving the media. In 1999, the government began to censor the news. This led to the death of a journalist named Georgiy Gongadze. These events caused many people to protest in the streets.

In 2004, a huge event called the Orange Revolution happened. People protested because they thought the election was unfair. Kuchma did not seek a third term as president. Instead, he acted as a mediator to help leaders talk. He helped Viktor Yushchenko and Viktor Yanukovych find a way to settle things. Later, between 2014 and 2020, he helped with peace talks in Donbas. His legacy remains a very big topic in Ukraine today.
