Khertek Anchimaa-Toka was a very important leader in a place called Tuva. She was born in 1912 near a settlement called Kyzyl-Dag. Her family were peasant hunters. When she was a small child, a sickness called smallpox hit her region. This was a very sad time because it took her father and one sister. To help her family, six-year-old Khertek lived with other relatives.

Khertek worked very hard to learn new things. In her youth, she learned to read and write in the Mongolian language. She was also one of the first people to learn the new Tuvan alphabet. Later, she traveled a long way to Moscow to study. The trip was about 5,000 kilometers and took three weeks. It was a hard job because she had to learn Russian quickly. She was one of only 11 Tuvan students to graduate from that university.

After her studies, Khertek took on many big jobs. She worked to help women in her country. She wanted women to have better jobs and more schooling. In 1938, she led a group called the Tuvan Zhenotdel. This group worked to improve life for women. In 1940, she became the Chair of the Presidium of Little Khural. This made her the first female head of state in history who was not a royal.

During her time as a leader, a large war broke out. Khertek helped her people support the Soviet Union during World War II. She helped gather resources and people to help with the war effort. In 1944, Tuva joined the Soviet Union as a new state. Khertek and her husband, Salchak Toka, were both very powerful leaders. They worked together to lead Tuva for many years.

Khertek stayed active in her community for a long time. Even after her main job ended, she worked on art and literacy. In 1962, she held a high position in the Tuvan government. She was in charge of things like health, schools, and sports. She lived a long and full life. Khertek Anchimaa-Toka died in 2008 at the age of 96.
