Khertek Anchimaa-Toka was a leader in Tuva. She was born in 1912 to a family of hunters. When she was young, a sickness took her father and sister. This made life very hard for her family.

Khertek worked hard to learn. She learned to read and write in Mongolian. Later, she went to a big school in Moscow. It was a very long trip. She was one of only 11 students to finish that school. This helped her get important jobs in her home land.

She worked to help women. She wanted them to have better jobs and more schooling. In 1940, she became the head of the Tuvan People's Republic. This made her the first woman in history to lead a country. She was not a queen or a royal. She earned her place through work.

During a large war, she helped her people. She helped gather resources to assist the Soviet Union. In 1944, Tuva joined the Soviet Union. Khertek stayed active in her community for many years. She died in 2008 at the age of 96.
