He joined groups to fight for Tamil rights. He felt the government treated his people unfairly.

The Tamil Tigers fought the government for over 25 years. This long fight was a civil war. In 2002, there were talks to find peace. Prabhakaran met with reporters to talk about these plans. He said his people wanted their own home.

Peace talks did not work. The Sri Lankan Army began a new fight in 2006. In May 2009, the fighting ended when Prabhakaran died. His death brought an end to the long war. Some people saw him as a hero. Others saw him as a very tough leader.
