Marthanda Varma was a king in southern India. He ruled the land of Travancore from 1729 to 1758. When he first became king, his land was small. Powerful local nobles often made the rules instead of the king. Marthanda Varma worked hard to take back control. He removed many of these nobles from power. He also built a large army of 50,000 men.

The king wanted to make his kingdom strong through trade. He focused on selling black pepper. He also made rules for other goods. This helped his land grow wealthy. In 1741, he fought a big battle at Colachel. He defeated the Dutch East India Company. After this win, he captured many Dutch prisoners. One man, Eustachius de Lannoy, became a special leader in the king's army.
