A huge flood happened in 1341. The water changed the land and the rivers.

This created a new port in the city of Kochi. Because of this, many traders moved there to do business.

Cochin had many rivals. The Zamorin of Calicut was a powerful leader. He led invasions that made the kingdom smaller. To stay safe, Cochin made deals with others. In 1500, King Unni Goda Varma made a deal with Portugal. This helped the kingdom stay independent. Later, the Dutch and the British also helped the kings.

In the 1900s, the kingdom changed again. It joined with the kingdom of Travancore.
