Anthony van Diemen was a leader from the Netherlands. He worked for the Dutch East India Company. This was a very large trading group. At first, he tried to be a merchant. His business failed, and he lost his money. Then, he joined the trading company. He moved to a place called Batavia. He was very good at his job. In 1635, he became the Governor-General. This means he was a top leader.

Van Diemen wanted to find new lands. He sent many ships on big trips. One explorer was named Abel Tasman. In 1642, Tasman sailed for him. Tasman found a large island. He named it Van Diemen's Land to honor his leader. Later, people changed the name to Tasmania. This was because the old name was linked to hard times for prisoners. Many places still use his name today. You can find his name on islands and capes. Even a type of snake has his name. He died in 1645 in Batavia.
