Anthony van Diemen was a powerful leader from the Netherlands. He was born in Culemborg in 1593. At first, he tried to make money as a merchant in Amsterdam. This plan did not work, and he lost his money. He then joined the Dutch East India Company to start again. He sailed to Batavia, which is now called Jakarta. This city was the capital of the Dutch East Indies.

Van Diemen was very good at his work. A leader named Jan Pieterszoon Coen saw his talent. By 1626, Van Diemen was a high official in the company. He married Maria van Aelst in 1630. In 1635, he was chosen as the Governor-General. This role began on January 1, 1636. He stayed in this position for nine years. He worked hard to grow the company's power in South-East Asia.

Van Diemen loved to explore new places. He wanted to find the "Great South Land." He sent many ships on big journeys to find it. One trip to find gold and silver islands did not work. Another trip to Korea also found nothing new. Still, he did not give up on his goal. He asked Frans Visscher to make a plan for new trips. In August 1642, Van Diemen chose Abel Janszoon Tasman to lead a new voyage.

Abel Tasman sailed east from Mauritius in November 1642. He missed the coast of Australia but found a large island. Tasman called this land Van Diemen's Land to honor his boss. A group of people went ashore at Blackman Bay on the Tasman Peninsula. They saw the local Tasmanian people and planted a flag. Later, the name was changed to Tasmania in 1855. This happened because the old name was linked to hard times for prisoners.

Many things today still carry the name of Van Diemen. You can find the Van Diemen Gulf in northern Australia. His wife's name is on Cape Maria van Diemen in New Zealand. There is also a place called Maria Island in Tasmania. In Taiwan, a place called Fort Antonio was built by the Dutch. Even a type of whip snake is named after him. Van Diemen died in Batavia in 1645.
