Dirk Hartog was a Dutch sailor from the 1600s. He was born into a family that worked at sea. In 1616, he worked for the Dutch East India Company. This was a large group of traders. Hartog was the master of a ship named Eendracht.

In January 1616, his ship set sail from the Netherlands. A big storm hit the fleet. Hartog became separated from the other ships. He sailed across the Indian Ocean. On October 25, 1616, he found some islands. They were not lived in by people. He landed on an island near Shark Bay in Australia.

Hartog stayed for three days. He wanted to leave a record of his visit. He fixed a pewter plate to a post. He scratched a note on the metal. This is now called the Hartog Plate. Later, a man named Willem de Vlamingh found the plate in the sand. He took it back to Amsterdam. Today, that island is named Dirk Hartog Island. Many streets in Australia also use his name.
