In 1615, Willem and his brother Jan went on a big trip. They had two ships named Eendracht and Hoorn. They wanted to find a new way to the Spice Islands. They did not want to use the same path as the Dutch East India Company. This company had rules about trade.

Willem found a new way to the Pacific Ocean. He sailed around a place he named Cape Horn. He named a strait after a man named Le Maire. Sadly, his brother Jan died during the trip.
