The Drake Passage is a wide stretch of water.

It sits between South America and Antarctica. The passage connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.

It is 800 kilometers wide. This makes it the shortest way to cross from Antarctica to another land.

The water here is very powerful. A huge current flows through it. We call this the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. This current meets no land to slow it down. Because of this, waves can grow to 12 meters tall.

Traveling through these rough seas is very hard for ships.

Many animals live in these cold waters. You might see whales or dolphins.

Many birds also fly here. These include penguins and albatrosses.

Long ago, the land was different. Antarctica and South America were once joined together. They pulled apart millions of years ago. This opened the passage and changed the world's weather. The open water helps move heat around the planet. This keeps the global oceans moving like a big conveyor belt.
